Biblical Background

The Bible contains numerous references to the Sea of Galilee and speaks much about Jesus in the Galilee – and about fishermen, fishing and boats. In fact, the first four disciples of Jesus were fishermen. As the primary source of family income and physical sustenance for most who lived in the Galilee region, fishing on the Galilee was the focal point of everyday life. In Bible times the Galilee represented life itself – and along with it … hope, fear, tragedy and triumph. The Galilee was then, and remains today, a uniquely powerful location for faith, history, archaeology, global politics and culture.

While the Bible contains many references to the Galilee, the following three scriptural excerpts illustrate the importance of the Galilee to Jesus himself, his disciples, and later to the hundreds of millions of Jesus’ followers whose lives have been eternally changed by this “Man from Galilee.”

Matthew 4:18-22 The Cost of Following Christ
While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Luke 5:4-9 Trusting God In Every Situation
And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken.

Mark 4:37-41 Putting Aside All Fear
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
